SPAR Lancashire School Games Event Day 2017

0

It’s School Games Season, and this year it has been better than ever. Ok, yes it may have rained for the first time in 5 years, but this didn’t dampen the spirits of the pupils who came to compete in one of the 16 different competitions. It was fantastic to see over 2000 students from 15 districts coming together in Blackpool’s Stanley Park to compete to be crowned county champions and take home one of the sought after trophies.

SPAR have proudly sponsored the Lancashire School Games for 11 years and for the third time Rock FM hosted the Opening Ceremony, which saw all schools marching in the district parade, wearing their sunglasses and proudly waving their homemade banners and flags.

The variety of sports catered for meant that ages of competitors ranged from 8 to 15, with a number of inclusive competitions taking place as well. Some of the new sports for 2016 were Secondary Girls Touch Rugby and a Primary School Mixed Cricket.

The event couldn’t have run without the 350 volunteers who worked their socks off in unfavourable conditions to make sure the event was enjoyable for everyone involved. So we want to say a huge thank you to all of our School Games Maker Volunteers, 50% of who were young leaders from schools across the county.

The Closing Ceremony Party was a chance for pupils to let off some steam and celebrate their successes of the day. Acts included St George’s High School’s Winning Dance group, The Lancaster and Chorley Choir and School Games favourites Myth of Unity.

Over 450 medals were given out to winning pupils with Chorley being crowned county champions bringing home six sets of medals including four gold, one silver and one bronze. Well done Chorley!

Lancashire Sport would like to thank all the School Games Organisers and Schools for their continued support and hard work throughout the year. The Lancashire School Games is an inspirational event that highlights the importance of competing and participating in School Games Festivals for pupils across the county. Congratulations on another successful year!
