Blackburn & Darwen High 5s Netball 2019

On Tuesday 21st May the top 10 Primary Netball teams came together at St Bede’s High School to see who would be crowned Blackburn and Darwen High 5s Netball Champions. The top 10 teams had qualified from 2 heats earlier in the month and in total 27 Schools were involved.

High 5 is the massively popular entry game of netball. It’s a great way for kids to get active, enjoy themselves and make new friends. It’s designed specifically for children, aged 9-11, and uses fun and variety to get them into the game, polish skills and aid fitness.

High 5 can be for mixed or single-sex teams with a maximum of two boys on court at any one time.  A key part of High 5 is players rotating round positions. This means that all young people get to experience every position on court and makes for fitter more adaptable players as they get older.

The teams in attendance on the 21st May were Lower Darwen, Longshaw, St Gabriel’s, St Pauls Hoddlesden, Turton & Edgworth, St Paul’s RC, St James Lower Darwen, St Francis, Shadsworth and St Barnabas’ Darwen.  The 10 teams were split into 2 groups and played a round robin format over the 4 courts.  The top 2 teams from each group then progressed to the semi-finals.

Group A consisted of Lower Darwen, Longshaw, St Gabriel’s, Shadsworth and Turton & Edgworth. St Gabriel’s won all of their 4 games to top the group and Turton & Edgworth also progressed to the semi-finals winning 3 out 0f their four games.

Group B contained St Paul’s Feniscowles, St Paul’s Hoddlesden, St James Lower Darwen, St Francis and St Barnabas. St Paul’s Feniscowles topped the group with St Francis also making it to the semi-finals after finishing 2nd in the group.

This meant that the 2 semi-finals saw St Gabriel’s take on St Francis and Turton & Edgworth take on St Paul’s Feniscowles.  Both games were very competitive, St Pauls Feniscowles overcame Turton and Edgworth after a strong performance whilst St Gabriel’s were too strong for St Francis in the other semi-final to progress to the final.

So St Francis took on Turton & Edgworth in the 3rd/4th place play-off and it was St Francis who took the bronze medals thanks to a 2-1 victory.

The final was a great game between two very good teams. St Paul’s Feniscowles came out on top with a 5-0 victory to claim the Gold and the 2019 Blackburn & Darwen High 5 Netball title.

St Paul’s Feniscowles will now represent the Borough at the Spar Lancashire School Games on the 2nd July in Blackpool.
